Prominent politician of the Democratic Party during Iowa's early days as a state. Dodge was a supporter of the Homestead Bill, Compromise Bill of 1850, anti-slavery legislation, and temperance. He served 3 terms as a congressional representative (1840-1846) before becoming one of Iowa's first 2 senators. Himie Voxman is among UI's most honored faculty and administrators. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the UI with high distinction in 1933, and received a master's degree in 1934 in the psychology of music, studying with pioneering researcher Carl Seashore.
